Tabgha (Dalmanutha – Tabgha)
The area of the Sea of Galilee can be divided into two areas. The fertile valleys suited on the western shores of the Sea of Galilee are known by Tabgha. This area is located about 2.5 miles (4km) southeast of Capernaum. The Arabic name “Tabgha” is derived from the Greek “Heptapegon” that means seven springs. In ancient times, many springs flow in this area that helped operating water mills.
Lady Egeria (381-384) mentioned the seven springs (Septem Fontes) that can be seen in the eastern side of Chapel of the Primacy of St Peter today.
At Tabgha you may visit the Chapel of the Primacy of St Peter that stands over the place where Jesus appeared to his disciples and told Peter “Feed my sheep” (John 21:17), the Church of the Multiplication that commemorates the miracle of feeding of five thousand people, the Church of the Sermon on the Mount, Migdal the hometown of Mary Magdalene, Tiberius and Hammat Tiberius.
